Understanding Mental Illnesses 5 A: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (In-Class Activity - Teacher Only View)
Description
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, is a is much misunderstood neuro-developmental disorder, in most cases caused by genetics with symptoms (behaviour problems) resulting from difficulties with the executive functions of the brain (e.g., problem solving, working memory, inhibition control). It is one of the most common disorders of childhood, but in most cases continues to affect adolescents and adults. This two-part activity explores the causes, symptoms, and treatments of ADHD through interactive activities.
Task
Please note that you may choose to use either the X-Y Activity and/or the Stroop Test in this in-class activity, depending on the amount of time available to you.
1. Open the X-Y Activity Powerpoint.
2. Instruct students to slap the top of their desks when they see the X appear on the screen, and perform no action when they see the Y.
3. Next take the The Stroop Test, either as a class or broken into small groups (if multiple computers are available to support this).
3. Discuss this experience as a group.
- With respect to the X-Y Activity, ask them whether it difficult to stop when the Y appeared on the screen? Why?
- With respect to the Stroop Test, ask them whether it was difficult to say the correct colour? Why?
4. Explain to the students that that people living with ADHD have difficulties with executive functions, such as impulse control and effective use of their attentional abilities, making it difficult to delay or inhibit some actions. Relate these difficulties to students reactions during the X/Y and Stroop test activities. Discuss the implications for young people living with ADHD of not being able to react appropriately in some situations, such as the tendency to interrupt others, blurt out answers, mouth off to parents or teachers, or engage in risky activities.
Move on to Activity 2.5, which will allow students to learn more about ADHD and apply their learning.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about the complex causes and symptoms of ADHD
- Explore popular treatments for ADHD
- Explore strategies to manage time, attention and impluses as well as how to support students living with ADHD
