Women and the Revolution

Mar 9, 2011 at 10:25 PM by Terry Godwaldt

Women of the Arab world are not typically portrayed in the American media with empowering imagery, to say the least. What is the role of women in the shifting politics of the Middle East? How can women in the West give meaningful support to their sisters in the Arab world?

Women of the middle east are not portrayed as powerful because of the way their religion and culture guides them to live. It would be inaccurate to portray them differently.

I think that a factual portrayal of women's lives in the Middle East would be more appropriate. In the Western media, this could very well be an eye-opener to show what women are subjected to.

Although empowering women is not apart of the muslim religion, is it really fair that they are treated with such low disregard? Will these revolts also try to give more rights to women?

do you believe that women are not as involved as men in the revolutions or is it that the media gives them less coverage? Personally, I've heard of stories of powerful women in Egypt who had a very public presence during the protests.

Clearly women are equal to men so therefore Muslim women should have equal rights and not have to cover their faces.

It was shocking to see mobs of arab women in raids in the middle east on t.v. They are trying to make a change and women in other countries can show thier suppost through the media maybe?

I think that women in the middle east are already evolving as western influence invades their way of life. Personally I believe that they have the choice to convert to western ways or not. I also believe that western women should not try and over power the influence of other women in countries such as the middle east, it is up to them to watch the news or travel if they want to experiance other ways of life.

I think the women got sick of being treated like a doormat and decided to rebel and become their own person, as they had a right to do.

Although it is part of the religion for women to keep their faces covered i dont think it is fair that women are treated with such disrespect. Women are just as equal as men so therefore women should be treated with just as much respect as men.

Women in the Arab world are treated terribly because of the society in which they live. I think that women have had a huge role in the revolutions that have happened in the Middle East and will have a big role if these countries decide to change the way that they are run. I also believe that it is not the place of the Western world to be interfering with what is going on in these Middle East countries just based solely on their society. These countries have been fine for an extremely long time and their times of biggest conflit have been because of the Western world. For example, the Crusades were fought because the Europeans belived that their religion was superior to Islam. The Americans have been in the MIddle East often in the last 20 years. Their has been Operation Desert Storm, the war on terror, and the Iraq War. All have been because the Western World believe that the Middle East world is wrong in their beliefs.
